Roll With The Changes (Jam Version)
Album: Arch Allies - Live At Riverport
Genres: Rock
Midwestern arena-rock nostalgia, served live with an extra helping of cheese! Too bad Dennis DeYoung chose to sit this one out!

"Hey Kevin," shouts Styx's Tommy Shaw in scripted-stage-banter mode, "Whaddaya say we do one of yours?" That's the cue for Kevin Cronin and his fellow Speedwagons to amble onto the stage, and for the sold-out St. Louis crowd to go absolutely apeshit. Originally released on 1978's appallingly-titled You Can Tune A Piano, But You Can't Tune A Fish, "Roll With The Changes" is really the perfect vehicle for a multi-band jam, thanks to its exuberant feel and flexible structure. The back-slapping shouts of encouragement ("Take it, JY!") are predictably cheesy, but everyone seems to be having a good time playing together, and the brief musical duels (Styx lead guitarist James Young vs. REO axeman Dave Amato; REO organist Neil Doughty vs. Styx keyboardist Lawrence Gowan, etc.) do generate some occasional sparks. The big bummer, though, is the fact that the absence of Styx vocalist/keyboardist Dennis DeYoung deprives us of a true "Battle of the Rock Liberaces" with his REO counterpart Cronin. I guess you've gotta roll with the changes, of course, but DeYoung's flamboyant presence would have really put this baby over the top.
