Colin Hay

If I Go
Album: Transcendental Highway
Genres: Pop
Colin leaves the prankster persona of his Men At Work days behind for this dark, harmonic, and dare we say -- subtly demonic -- slice of Southern California pop!

Colin Hay is best known to U.S. listeners as the frontman of Men At Work, who racked up worldwide album sales of well over 10 million during their early-'80s heyday. Bred in Australia, the band scored a No. 1 album in the States with Business As Usual, which spawned Top 40 radio evergreens "Who Can It Be Now" and "Down Under." The follow-up sets, 1983's Cargo and 1985's Two Hearts, enjoyed similar success. Before disbanding several years ago, Men At Work earned a Grammy, a Juno and several Aria Awards. To cap things off, they were inducted into the Australian Music Hall of Fame in 1993.

After toying with an acting career and issuing several well-regarded solo albums in Australia during the early '90s, Hay is now intent on reigniting the interest of American music fans. On Oct. 26, 1999, he released the album Transcendental Highway on the M.S.-distributed Farren Music label. The song "If I Go" is exemplary of the album's laid-back pop tone. Actually, it's easy to listen to the cut and be pleasantly propelled back to the '70s So-Cal rock era -- particularly given its breezy, lite-rock instrumentation.

Hay's voice is instantly recognizable, and his performance gradually builds from an intimate, almost conversational style during the verses into a more belted delivery during the chorus. The hook is fleshed out with layers of sunny, almost Beach Boys-like harmonies by Hay, as well as with several heavy-handed guitar riffs. It's a combination that renders "If I Go" well worth a spin.

It gets me singing along everytime.
Gus

Kind of an easy listening type of tune… with a little pop I suppose. Good if you like that genre, but otherwise, nothing stands out about it to me.
