It actually takes a lot of balls to record such blatantly tender wuss-rock as Matchbox Twenty’s new ballad “If You’re Gone.” Undeniably pretty, this acoustic, horn-laden track treads a sticky line toward the syrup bottle, but damn if that Rob Thomas doesn’t know how to put a teardrop in his voice and sell that “sensitive guy” thing as though his life -- or more precisely, his career as a movie soundtrack artist -- depended on it. Soaring, orchestral, mature, and “safe,” this is the perfect music for a break-up scene on the silver screen. Of course, the film will have a happy ending and the couple will reunite; the dynamics of the tune literally demand it. “If You’re Gone” is one of those lushly produced, “beautiful” songs that multi-platinum “overnight successes” tend to release on their sophomore outings to demonstrate growth, substance, and depth of songwriting. One tends to feel manipulated by such a predictable course of action, but the melodic and hook-driven tune genuinely touches the heart and Thomas really sells it. For that alone, he should be lauded as a courageous artist who’s willing to suffer the ridicule of exposing his “softer” side with such total abandon. It may not be cool to admit you like this one; just file it under G for “guilty pleasures,” turn up the radio, and call it a day.
