Slide
Album: Vol. Two: Good Time For a Bad Attitude
Genres: Alternative
Art Alexakis gets back to basics on this ripping rocker. “Slide” is pure, unabashed pop with a dark, psychotic twist.

Art Alexakis stands down from the soapbox on this raucous bit of psychedelic bash-and-pop and presents a welcome reprieve from all those “poor me” tracks about his loser dad. Though he still finds comfort in the self-indulgent crazy stuff, it’s forgivable here, as “Slide” opens with a GN’R-inspired guitar intro that launches into a fuzzed-up vocal rant regarding Mr. A’s tenuous take on sanity. This is a guy who freely admits he’s losing his mind, losing control; he’s elastic, he’s ecstatic; he just can’t act his age, can’t control his rage, etc. But happily, this grooving modern rocker literally does rage, thanks to an incredibly tight rhythm section that pays tribute to the acid-tripping Beatles through aggressively melodic bass lines and no-holds-barred Ringo-fied skins. For once, it sounds like this band is actually having fun exorcising its well-publicized demons -- and that is a really good thing. After all, it’s only rock ‘n’ roll, right? Alexakis’ evocative wordplay is sophisticated without being smarmy, and he’s writing from a more universal standpoint than the incredibly personal musical diaries to which we’ve grown accustomed. “We were fading like the bottom of a bad dream,” he starts. “We were heading south, looking for a good time / Faces look so pretty in the spotlight, all blown out and bathed inside a world of white.” Everclear strikes an effective balance here between poetry and motion and this is one “Slide” you definitely should ride.
