Scott Dunbar That's Alright Mama Album: From Lake Mary
Genres: Blues
A footstompin' acoustic version of the Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup classic, recorded live in a Mississippi fisherman's cabin back in 1972! This cat's got an even louder boot-heel than John Lee! |

For those of us raised on Elvis Presley's breakneck Sun Records version, Scott Dunbar's playful acoustic take on Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup's "That's All Right, Mama" is a little unsettling at first. The tempo seems to drag, and the lyrics (obviously plucked from the recesses of Dunbar's memory) don't always jibe with the ones we're familiar with. But if you just sit back and let the man do his thing, his genuine good humor and loud-ass boot stomps will pull you right in and have you singing along. Positively steeped in live-in-my-cabin ambience (at one point, you can even hear the front door creak open!), the track paints a pleasing picture of a man who's content with his lot in life, and is happy just to be able to make good music for the enjoyment of his living-room audience. Dunbar's gone now, but the warmth of his soul still radiates brightly.
