Groove merchants Medeski, Martin and Wood are back with a blissed-out slice of their signature brand of trip-jazz -- the sound that has been sorely missed since the release of 1998’s Combustication. On the heels of their more “experimental” (read: weird -- sorry, fellas) independent release, Farmer’s Reserve and the band’s live acoustic release, Tonic, “The Dropper” finds MMW back in top form, delivering a stealth bomb of smooth-as-a-baby’s-bottom groove. Sounding like the soundtrack to a cat burglary, the track sneaks up on you with Billy Martin’s well-placed percussive bombshells and John Medeski’s mad scientist keyboard ramblings, but the true glue here is Chris Wood’s bottom-of-the-well bass line, which snakes in and out of Medeski & Martin’s aural offerings. Medeski coaxes a wide variety of spacey sounds out of his board -- sounds made sweeter by some slick studio knob twiddling. Pretty much an unstructured groove exploration, “The Dropper” will drop you… flat on your ass.

I had the chance to see MMW about a month ago...and they were amazing live, and just as good on a recording!

Nice. I have been a fan from the early days (before the DJ) and they continue to push the envelope of funk
