With a most aptly titled tune, one of metal’s biggest guilty pleasures returns with a vengeance. Back in the day, Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth’s now-dated shriek and Bobby Gustafson’s unapologetically Metallica-derived shreds were a blissed-out joy for the speed-freak faithful. Overkill is one of the few bands from thrash’s heydey that never took a breather -- without fail, New York’s favorite falsetto and the wrecking crew of the moment (yeah, there have been quite a few lineup changeups) have cranked out a time capsule every year or two to keep the dream alive. 2000’s Bloodletting marks the latest salvo, and by all indications they’re firing on all cylinders. “What I’m Missin’” is a razor-sharp and thoroughly aggro-to-the-core statement of what the fuck you’ve been missin’. New axeman Dave Linsk steps into the wrecking crew shoes without missing a beat -- and there are lots of ‘em! A few missteps into attempted melodies -- almost an expected mistake from Blitz -- are steamrolled by the furious pace and tighter-than-a-junkie-on-rails riffing. It may be a guilty pleasure, but I still have to replace the windows I punched out listening to this puppy. Hope your home fares better.
