Dave Hollister One Woman Man Album: Chicago '85… The Movie
Genres: R&B
The song for everyone who’s met an old flame and gotten to say, “Sorry, baby -- I’m hitched.” Crystal-clear vocals and a gospelish big finish from the ex-Blackstreet-er. |

Ever met up with one of your exes out of the blue and been able to say “You are lookin’ good as hell /But I can’t go home with you”? Or did you just wish you could have? Whichever way, that’s the premise for this melodic, midtempo R&B short story from former Blackstreet member Dave Hollister. It’s actually hurt by Hollister’s crisp enunciation, which gives lines like “There have been many others … quite a few one-night stands / Some of their names I can’t remember” a clinical feel that’s kind of goofy. But when Hollister gathers himself and his backing singers up for the rousingly emotional (and inevitable) finale, where he bids his old love adieu and tells her “I’ve got to go home to my baby,” it’s tough not to get sucked in. Of course, he stretches the farewell out long enough that you have to wonder how much he means it -- and that’s probably the point.
