It's been a long time since we've heard from Peter Gabriel -- the British singer released his last proper solo album in 1992, and has hardly hit the recording studio since. But even in his time away, Gabriel has kept in touch with the music world; he's released works by new artists on his Real World label and promoted world music through his WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance) Festival. Which is why his decision to incorporate industrial music into his new single -- from the soundtrack to the new sci-fi flick Red Planet -- comes as something of a surprise. Razor-edged guitars and aggressively growled vocals dominate most of the song, until Gabriel's distinctive voice pokes through the haze of distortion like a sun break in the midst of a storm. Granted, the song befits a movie about a botched trip to Mars, which may have been Gabriel's intent; after all, he's had plenty of experience scoring soundtracks. But as a long-awaited addition to the Gabriel canon, the song is a disappointment. Gabriel is usually one step ahead of his peers when it comes to musical innovations. With this melding of industrial and pop, he's more than one step behind.

First of all, what's up with that picture up top?!? Anyways, this track sounds most like the theme to HBO's "Sopranos" -- the "woke up this mornin' got myself a gun song". It's OK, but definitely not another "In Your Eyes".
