Half guitar-friendly fusion and half straight-up bebop, this is the sort of composition that makes you understand why people have held Christian McBride in such high regard for years. Beginning with a delicate piano-and cymbals intro, “Science Fiction” quickly roars to life with an urgent, rock-influnced pulse that’s offset by ethereal, twinkling keyboard fills and a pensive horn chart. The best comparison is to some of Weather Report’s stronger outings -- you can hear the influence of longtime McBride idol Wayne Shorter throughout -- although there’s also a nod to guest pianist Herbie Hancock’s late ‘60s work with Miles Davis. But McBride doesn’t abandon his traditional roots, as he fits a lengthy bop section, with plenty of free blowing by saxman Ron Blake, smack in the middle of the middle of the track without missing a beat. After it returns to the original motif, there’s a generous helping of David Gilmore’s Matheny-esque guitar to close things out, wrapping up a most impressive package that really does seem to have something for jazz fans of all stripes.
