The ringmaster of "The Dope Show" returns with a vengeance, toting what may well be George W. Bush's campaign theme for 2004! |

Rock music and U.S. politics have always made strange bedfellows, especially when Republicans have tried to twist popular tunes for their own nefarious purposes. Anyone remember Ronald Reagan misinterpreting Bruce Springsteen's "Born In The U.S.A." as a "nuke the commies" anthem? Or George Bush's underhanded attempts to appropriate Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry, Be Happy" as the theme for his re-election campaign of 1992? Bush's ne'er-do-well son ran into similar problems this year, when Tom Petty refused to let him use "I Won't Back Down" as the theme for his White House run. Too bad he didn't get his hands on this track from Marilyn Manson's new record; I'm sure Marilyn penned the song's chorus ("Do you love your guns? (Yeah!) God? (Yeah!) The Government? (Fuck Yeah!)") with an ironic smile, but he delivers it with such saliva-spraying intensity that you can just picture Dubya gleefully nodding his empty head along with him. The word on the street has been that Holy Wood is a commercially-minded throwback to Manson's earlier records, but from this evidence it sounds to me like he's just jacked the Mechanical Animals sound up a few more notches. "The Love Song" is catchy as hell, it rocks like a mother, and it's sure to piss plenty of people off. What more could you ask of a three-minute rock anthem?
