I can't hear this Eagles song without thinking of Don, my college roommate, who spent his childhood believing that it was really called "Naked To The Limit". Well, Don, there's nothing naked about this live rendition of the song, which was culled for their new box set from last year's New Year's Eve show at the Staples Center. Though somewhat over-produced, the original (from 1975's One Of These Nights) at least had a palpable undercurrent of Southern California angst; you knew that Glenn Frey drove ridiculously expensive cars, screwed an endless procession of tanned and toned babes, and did more blow in an afternoon than you could afford in a year, but "Take It To The Limit" could somehow still pull your heartstrings. This time, however, Frey sings it like he's reading the lyrics off a cue card, and his bandmates play like they're counting the heads in the audience. It sounds nice, of course -- sounding slick and professional is what The Eagles have always done best -- but the emotional edge is completely MIA. Stick with the hit version, and let the exploitative box set rot on the shelves like it deserves

Oh my lord these guys are old farts. There is literally no emotion in the vocals. Ya just keep waiting for a breath of life or something.
