James Cotton Lightning Album: Fire Down Under the Hill
Genres: Blues
A vibrant blues instrumental from Cotton's new album, with his ageless harp leading the charge. Tastier than a freshly-dunked rib tib! |

Don't know if it's from age, illness, bad behavior or a combination of all of the above, but James Cotton's once-powerful voice now sounds terribly weak and worn, a sad state of affairs that renders Fire Down Under The Hill (his latest Telarc recording) extremely rough going at times. Thankfully, the only singing Cotton does on "Lightning" comes straight from his harp, an instrument that time itself seems incapable of diminishing. Cotton's playing is both funky and sweet, and deftly avoids the showy over-blowing that seems to mark (and mar) most contemporary blues harmonica recordings. It also doesn't hurt that Cotton is assisted here by guitarist Rico McFarland and pianist David Maxwell, two capable vets from his touring band; thanks to their telepathic interplay, the whole track positively throbs with vibrant life. If old-school blues harp is your bag, you'd better snap this tasty baby up toot sweet.
