She’s sometimes seen as a tough and formidable taskmaster, but this Musicblitz Exclusive shows the warm and playful side of jazz legend Abbey Lincoln, giving a peek at the big heart behind the unmistakable scratchy vocals. Built around a sunny, shuffling groove, “I Could Write It For A Song” offers the perfect match for Lincoln, giving her plenty of room to maneuver amidst the loose-limbed playing of her trio. And she makes the most of it, loading lines with careful inflections that sound tossed off until you go back and take a closer listen. The tune’s a tribute to her old friend, the late and often misunderstood Thelonious Monk, but some of the lines could also be interpreted as autobiography -- especially the theme of looking back and trying to capture a life in song, since Lincoln’s now in her eighth decade and has developed into a respected composer herself. “Hopin’ when the wagon comes / I’ll be at my best,” she sings. Don’t worry, she is.
