  Los Lobos
Tomorrow Never Knows
Album: El Cancionero - Mas Y Mas: A History Of The Band From East L.A.
Genres: Pop,Rock
This live cover of one of the Beatles' greatest songs can't quite match the original -- what could? -- but still gives plenty of psychedelic bang for yer buck.

The closing track of Revolver, the Beatles' 1966 masterpiece, "Tomorrow Never Knows" single-handedly ushered in the psychedelic age. With its heavily treated vocals (John Lennon claimed he was trying to sound like hundreds of Tibetan monks singing from a mountain top), backwards guitar flurries and hypnotic rhythms, the song still has the power to enchant and inspire. So it's not surprising that Los Lobos, a band long known for the impressive breadth of their musical scope, would want to take a crack at it. Recorded live in 1993 for a PBS special, this previously unreleased version (which can now be found on the new Mas Y Mas box set) has plenty to recommend it, especially its driving beat and two-minute psychedelic rave-up outro. Unfortunately, without all the studio trickery that the Beatles had at their disposal, Los Lobos' rendition lacks both the madness and the majesty of the original. Still, it's a fun rarity for the fans, delivered with the usual fire and skill one has come to expect from these East L.A. hombres.

I'm used to straight forward rock out stuff from Los Lobos. This confuses me. I guess you had to be there live to get it.

Any fans of the Chemical Bros. last album will enjoy this little diddy. Neat-o supreme.
