To my mind, Pat Metheny's most powerful statement came earlier this year, when he posted a rant on his website accusing Kenny G of essentially shitting on Louis Armstrong's grave (and on the history of American music in general) by dubbing one of his mealy sax solos over Louis' recording of "What A Wonderful World." Though unquestionably a technically brilliant guitar player, nothing Metheny has recorded has ever hit me in the gut (or made me go "right on!") in the same way as his words, and this new live version of "James" is no exception. Originally recorded for 1981's Offramp, this rendition features some nice semi-martial rhythms from drummer Bill Stewart and bassist Larry Grenadier, and is interesting for its keyboard-free arrangement (keyboardist Lyle Mays, a longtime Metheny collaborator, co-wrote and played on the original). But while Metheny's chordal runs are sweet and seductive, his single- note flurries sound more like annoying displays of technique than soulful explorations of melody. It also doesn't help that his guitar tone -- which, again, sounds great when he's playing chords -- is too muted and thin-sounding to really do justice to his playing; in fact, it almost seems like he's blowing out clusters of notes simply to make up for his guitar's lack of sustain. Hardcore Metheny fans will probably wet their pants over this, but mine shall remain noticeably dry.
