Propagandhi Back To The Motor League Album: Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes
Genres: Punk
By rejecting the "rules" of '90s punk rock, Propaghandi come up with one of the most punk rock songs of 2000. Watch as they get drunk, rock out, and burn down the mainstream all at once! |

When Propaghandi opens "Back to the Motor League" with a defiant shout of "I like to party fucking hard / I like my rock n' roll the same / Don't give a fuck if I burn out / Don't give a fuck if I fade away," it's easy to mistake the song for a damn-the-torpedoes, beer-drinkin'-and-hell-raisin' party anthem, and it is, in part. But when they go on to proclaim "Like-father-like-son rebels bloated on korn, eminems and bizkits / Lord, hear our prayer: take back Amy Grant mosh-crews and your fair-weather politics," or "I guess life is just a popularity contest / Success: the ability to perform within a framework of obedience / Just ask the candy-coated Joy-Cam rock-bands selling shoes for venture-capitalists," it's clear that the song is also a scathing indictment of many of the same rockers they initially seemed to emulate, the ones that believe style means more than substance and sales mean more than content. It's an interesting dichotomy, one that finds Propaghandi at once rejecting mainstream rock ideals and embracing them -- in effect saying "we don't want to be a part of your establishment, but we want to get drunk, rock out, and pass out just like the rest of the rockers." Musically, the song teeters on a similar precipice, thundering along filled with punk rock aggression while featuring extremely metallic guitar riffs at the forefront. If it all sounds like Propaghandi aren't sure which way they want to go, that may just be the point -- as they say in describing this one on their Web site, "aren't we an enigma?" That they are, and all the more fascinating for it.
