  The Distillers
Oh Serena
Album: The Distillers
Genres: Punk
If Joan Jett and Rancid crashed a party at Blondie's house, it'd probably sound a lot like this -- a crusty hardcore thrash with an unforgettable chorus!

Imagine Joan Jett fronting Rancid as they steamroll over Blondie, and you've got a good idea of what to expect out of the Distillers' "Oh Serena." Frontwoman Brody's gravelly yowls recall Jett's perfectly, and are absolutely suited to this hardcore punk thrasher. The eminently shoutable chorus is also incredibly hooky, so be prepared to catch yourself repeatedly shouting "Oh Serena" at the odd moments -- like Rancid's catchiest chorsues, it'll stick in your head for a good, long time. At the bridge, the band takes a sudden, shocking left turn into a surprisingly melodic choir of "oohs" and "ahhs" straight out of Blondie's "Hangin' On the Telephone," but don't even pause as they rocket past Ms. Harry, leaving her for dead as they smash headlong back into that shoutalong chorus. This one's bound to have fists thrusting in the air when they blast it out live. "Oh Serena" is an auspicious debut that should instantly put any doubt of this band's credibility to rest -- these girls (and guy) sound like they'd just as soon kick you as look at you, and that's just the way they should sound!
