Beastie Boys So Whatcha Want (Soul Assassins Remix) Album: n/a
Genres: Rap/Hip Hop
The Beasties meet up with the Cypress crew, but Muggs takes this one on the laid back tip -- draining most of the juice out of a true Boys classic. |

A little Cali cool can be a good thing, but it wasn’t what this formerly raucous Beastie Boys jam needed. On paper, the prospect of the Boys hooking up with Cypress Hill should have the hip-hop headz stoked -- yet as remixed by the Soul Assassins, the side project of Cypress DJ Muggs, this track loses the juice that made it a key part of Check Your Head way back in ‘92. The colossal, metallic drums and frantic turntable work of the original have been stripped away, replaced with a low-ridin’ bassline and twanging guitar that are at odds with the still-in-your-face rhyming intensity. It’s probably good fun in the car, and worthy of a place on any comp of Beasties odds & sods, but the greatest benefit might be that it’ll make you dig out your copy of Check Your Head, the final, genius installment of Ad Rock, MCA and Mike D’s career-opening hip-hop trilogy. Listen to the Boys’ version -- in fact, listen to the whole thing -- and then ask yourself: “Is this progress?”
