A smooth, upbeat reggae tune that's quintessentially Slackers, "Dave's Friend" is a slice of pure heaven by way of New York City. The focus of the song is on Vic Ruggiero's instantly recognizable voice, brilliantly supported by luscious, Hepcat-worthy harmonies, a tremendous, jazzy guitar countermelody, and a buoyant reggae groove. Longtime ska scenesters may enjoy spending idle time wondering exactly who the titular "Dave" is, especially when Ruggerio sings provocative lines like, "Call me sometime when you're done with your cocaine and speed / I may not be a friend you want, but I'm a friend that you need" (Is it the Slackers' own saxophonist, Dave Hillyard? Former Stubborn All-Stars bandmate Dave Hahn? Ex-Triple Crown records PR flack and Version City pal Dave Helm? Someone else entirely?). That won't matter to the casual listener, who will be swept up by the songs easy skankin' vibe and tasteful, understated horn accents, but for those in the know, it's certainly food for thought. In any event, "Dave's Friend" is easily an instant Slackers classic, easily standing toe to toe not only with the band's best material, but also with the likes of Hepcat, Stubborn All-Stars, and Dr. Ring-Ding as some of the best traditional Jamaican music being made today.

If this is just a sample of the new album, I can't WAIT until it actually hits the streets in February. Lyrically the song is as simple as can be, but the beats keep you skankin' all night long. A genuine favorite for years to come. Long line the true purveyors of ska!
