Marah The Catfisherman Album: Kids In Philly
Genres: Rock
It's hard to believe Marah are from Philly on this one -- this swampy, rootsy tune is pure Southern rock! |

"The Catfisherman" is a good example of a song whose music fits its lyrical content. When Dave Bielanko declares "I got a lantern runnin' on a-battery power / I got a couple of friends comin' by in an hour / I got a radio playin' blues, soul, and funk," it just wouldn't sound right without the southern-fried bluesy guitar riffs backing it up. When the song gets into Beck-ish cut-and-pasting near the middle, it loses a little of the energy (though the samples of a rod and reel and the report that "the Catfisherman has caught the funky bug" are clever), but the song charges back full strength immediately after, and winds up in classic swamp-rock tradition. Good rootsy fun that it would be easy to imagine hearing while lazing an afternoon away at that ol' fishin' hole.

Aerosmith? Spin Doctors? A mix between both. And not in a good way.
