Smashing Pumpkins Cash Car Star Album: Machina II
Genres: Alternative
Bust out those platforms, beeyatch! "Cash Car Star" is a piece of punk-inspired glam as shiny as Billy Corgan's bald head! |

Only Billy Corgan could give nods to punk, glam and Grand Funk Railroad's "We're an American Band" and do it without a trace of irony. Which is where "Cash Car Star" runs into its first major problem: Corgan's still taking himself too damn seriously. “Cash” sees Corgan leading the Smashing Pumpkins through a stale crunch of whining guitars and dull, thudding drums. Corgan growls out lyrics as angry as ever, causing you to wonder just when that whole "music as catharsis" bit is finally going to kick in. It also makes you wonder if it wasn't this festering rage that ultimately caused the band's split. Now a swan song of sorts for the recently retired Pumpkins, "Cash Car Star" is the sound of a band being eaten away by its pent-up fury.

With barely audible vocals and the cruncing guitar minus the power or inspiration, its no wonder the Pumpkins have lost their way, and dissolved.
