Genres: Jazz
A rollicking Afro-Cuban jam from the Buena Vista Social Club's esteemed pianist. ¡Sabroso! |

Chanchullo is Spanish for a sneaky trick, but the only tricky thing about this cut is trying to keep your feet and butt still while it plays! The slinky Afro-Cuban groove is absolutely irresistable, and Gonzalez' cascading piano runs conjure up enticing images of an evening thunderstorm over Havana. If some of his playing seems overtly flashy, like he's trying to fit too many notes or phrases into certain sections, that's because this opening track from his new CD is a descarga -- the sort of free-form jam that Cuban players typically get warmed up with -- and Gonzalez is just trying to get the blood pumping through his arthritic fingers. Of course, you wouldn't know he has arthritis just by listening; his playing is nimble, fluid, and full of life and funk. The track itself weighs in at over five minutes, but you'll find yourself wishing it was twice as long.
