People who remark in disbelief that record companies can milk yet another album from recently-departed rappers obviously don’t know how much unreleased material jazz legends like the Duke left behind. There’s a ton of it, and this new version of the all-time Ellington classic “Satin Doll” is just one small example. Unearthed by Ellington’s grandson Paul, who now leads the Ellington orchestra, it’s one of several previously unreleased tracks capturing the Duke in the Big Apple during one of his leanest periods, critically and commercially. Yet in recent years, jazz aficionados have begun to reexamine Ellington’s output between 1952 and 1955. While he was minus his main instrumental foil, saxophonist Johnny Hodges (this short performance has room only for a brief trumpet solo -- possibly by Clark Terry?) Duke’s standards remained high. True, there’s nothing particularly revelatory here -- it starts out, like other performances of the song from the same period, with Ellington’s delicate piano motif, and then the brass punches in midway through, livening up the measured tempo. But it’s a solid, understated performance that shows Duke and Co. were putting their best foot forward at the time, no matter who was listening.
