Mya Free Album: Fear of Flying
Genres: R&B
The D.C. diva’s OK on this slammin’ dance track, but it’s the production of Jam & Lewis that’ll have you saying “My, my Mya!” |

Face it, Mya’s a very credible entrant in the race for best R&B youngster (female). She doesn’t have the charm of Brandy, the vocal skills of Monica, or the overall talent of Aaliyah, but she does have lots of friends in high places, and two of ‘em help make “Free” a better-than-average dancefloor filler. Specifically, we’re talking about Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who just continue their Darwinian careers: seemingly able to adapt to any new musical strain that surfaces in R&B. This track is a virtual sampler of styles, veering from disco thump to skittering, minimalist R&B to Carribean coda, all without being terribly obvious about it or ever losing the plot. Mya’s overheated come-ons (FYI: she’s looking for a guy 6’5” or so, just to let most of you playas know you’re already out of the running) may be the least important part of the package, but taken as a whole, it’s sure hard to dislike.
