What’s amazing about the worldwide success of this refitted rocksteady smash from the mid-‘60s is how little it actually changed in its new duds. The one concession to the modern world is the inclusion of the boisterous Bounty Killer, who tosses in some toasts uncharacteristically low in the mix -- but even then, that ends up a small detail in Steely and Clevie’s loving remake of Dawn Penn’s biggest hit. The essential ingredients of the original remain untouched: the gently-swaying island riddim, the mournful blues structure and, of course, Penn’s vocal, which ties the two musics and two cultures together in a way that’s easier to hear than explain on paper. Proves that the folks at Studio One just might have been farther ahead of their time than anybody realized. (For the curious, the tune also got a jungle remix not long after its release, and that track is one of the must-have artifacts of the whole mid-‘90s ragga jungle era. Seek it out!)
