  A.F.I.
Totalimmortal
Album: All Hallow's EP
Genres: Punk
While an improvement over earlier efforts, A.F.I. still bring too many metal cliches to the table to be taken seriously by the hardcore scene.

While "Totalimmortal" is a vast improvement over A.F.I.'s past sludge-n'-shout thrash-fests, they're still easily surpassed by just about anyone on the hardcore scene these days. The tune is a lot more melodic and accessible than previous material (perhaps owing to the band's continued association with the Offspring?), but mires itself in too many lame '80s metal cliches to be taken seriously. While I'd rather hear Davey Havok imitate Ronnie James Dio (as he does here) than Sam Kinison (as he did all over 1999's Black Sails in the Sunset), and the thrashy chorus is catchy almost to a fault, the songs charms are overshadowed by warmed-over metal guitar, pseudo-Metallica posing, and a laughable spoken word break. Don't misunderstand, it's easy to see why the band's high-energy sound has a big following, but A.F.I. would be well advised to remember how another boring Suicidal Tendencies got when they took this route. More thrash, less metal -- please!
