Trends change by the minute in the worlds of electronica and dancehall, but some genres are just too potent to be abandoned. Take the ragga jungle that was all the rage in the UK in 1994 and 1995: fusing the raucous toasts of Jamaican DJs with the 160 BPM-and-up riddims of jungle created an unforgettable sound with staying power, even after its season in the sun was up and the backlash against ragga “junglists” had begun in earnest. You still find devotees crafting their own take on this cross-cultural melee, and one of the best is Norwegian DJ/producer Psychofreud. Featuring vocal bites courtesy of the late, great dancehall singer Garnett Silk and the obligatory, dubbed-out chatting breakdown, “What Tomorrow Brings” has the heavy island flavor of really great ragga jungle, although that window-rattling subbassline and the aggressive jump-up riddim are straight outta the 21st century. Should be a monster on the dancefloor -- get it before the next junglist revival!
