The real meat of Snoop’s stunning comeback is elsewhere on Tha Last Meal, thanks to a slew of vintage G-Funk tracks produced by old pal Dr. Dre and some of his disciples. This Timbaland effort, the first single off the disc, isn’t in the same league, but it ain’t bad either. Avoiding the train wreck that occurred on ‘99’s “Top Dogg,” when Snoop’s lazy rhymes sounded like dogg poop when set against jittery Eastern and Southern beats, Timbaland tried this time out to make the Doggfather feel a little more at home. The groove still has a little too much nervous bounce for Snoop’s drawl, but the G-funky rhythm guitar and chirping female backing vocals put him in familiar territory. And when he slides into his usual tales of high livin’ and hoein’ (“Bet a hundred dollars that they all wanna swallow,” he thoughtfully observes of some female admirers trailing his limo), he sounds so relaxed you’d swear the chronic kicked in mid-song.
