Mighty Sam McClain All We Need Is Love Album: Blues For The Soul
Genres: Blues
Horn-fueled supper-club blues that may be a little too tasteful for its own good. Mighty Sam's sure got some pipes, though! |

I'll say one thing for Mighty Sam McClain: He sure has a nice set of pipes on him. As this horn-fueled slice of Southern soul reveals, the man can easily glide between a harsh bark to a seductive croon, oftentimes within the same sentence. But McClain's warm personality and excellent singing can only do so much to overcome a fairly pedestrian tune (his own, I'm afraid) and sterile, Blues Brothers-like production. Yes, the horns are nice, but the whole track just sounds a little too clean, too scripted, and too eager to please. Worth checking out if you're into Bobby "Blue" Bland, Johnny Taylor, or any other Malaco artist from the last decade, but fans of the Fat Possum end of the spectrum should probably steer clear.

2.5 stars actually. Sam needs to get a bit grittier. I've seen him live & he rally delivers.
