Prodigy of Mobb Deep Pile Rap Album: n/a
Genres: Rap/Hip Hop
He’s not married to the Mobb (Deep), but Prodigy’s solo joint sounds a lot like his old hardcore hip-hop hook-up! You got a problem with that? Didn’t think so… |

Testing the waters before his first solo album dropped, Prodigy gave the faithful this white label single last year. In classic Mobb Deep style, this hard-and-spare track gets over on the don’t-fuck-with-me power of Pee’s voice. Lyrics offer the clever imagery you expect, but are also scattershot. It’s hard to bat a thousand, but Prodigy’s more in 50/50 territory here, alternating great lines like “Ever since a little yuke I had this lust/to pick up the motherfuckin' pen and just rush/like morphine beats through the wires of the EPS plus” with lame putdowns such as “Customers complain they can’t feel/you cooked up a half-ass meal.” After the ultra-minimal piano riff pounds on you a while and you vibe off of Prodigy’s rough-and-ready flow, you can chalk this one up on the positive side of the ledger. But really, advertising his sickle cell woes (again), as Pee does near the end here, does seem a little much.
