  Eminem
The Kids
Album: The Marshall Mathers LP (Clean Version)
Genres: Rap/Hip Hop
A “Just Say No” PSA starring Slim Shady? Heh heh, not exactly. Mr. Mathers takes a little detour through “South Park” as he reminds “The Kids” to avoid drugs. Hint: Nancy Reagan would not approve.

It’s safe to say this definitely isn’t what Dutch’s wife had in mind when she coined the whole “Just Say No” mantra. Eminem plays himself and “South Park’s” Mr. Mackey (there’s also a fake Cartman in the background; “‘South Park’ is gonna sue me!” Slim notes near the end) delivering an anti-drug lecture that strings you along for a while. He describes the pitfalls of pot, ecstasy, and ‘shrooms in typically graphic Eminem form. (Dope actually incites one guy to chop up a waffle shop waitress.) But the “Romper Room”-style melody and the ridiculous Mackey-ized chorus of “Drugs are just bad, mmm'kay?” should be the tipoff -- if you needed one -- that this isn’t Bill Bennett talking. The punchline is actually a little more clever than usual: Eminem asks kids not to do drugs so their parents won’t blame him for their subsequent problems. “Don't be me, cause if you grow up and you go and O.D./They're gonna come for me and I'ma have to grow a goatee/and get a disguise and hide, cause it'll be my fault,” he raps. Just to make sure you get it, he then destroys the “subtlety” of that jab by adding the unnecessary “So don’t do drugs/so there’ll be more for me.” The thing that may amaze some listeners is that this track replaced the murder epic “Kim” on the clean versions of The Marshall Mathers LP. Once you listen to “Kim,” you’ll understand.
