Genres: Reggae
A perfectly authentic slice of soulful ’60s ska for the modern ear. Murder never sounded so good! |

It’s only the clean production afforded by today’s studio technology that tips the listener off to the fact that the Radiation Kings’ “Murder” was created in the modern era. Otherwise, it would be easy to believe that this gorgeous ska track was a lost relic from the annals of the legendary Studio One. A solid ska riddim is driven by organ, guitar, bass, and tastefully tight horns (some of which come courtesy of label head King Django, himself). The music provides the perfect backdrop for Lisa White’s soaring and powerful lead vocals and harmonies. White is an artist who’s capable of incredibly classy vocal gymnastics, and the song’s call-and-response sequences demonstrate that this girl’s got soul. A ’50s rock bridge, complete with sax solo, breaks the tune up perfectly, capping off a track that’s both essential and darn near perfect.
