Punchy's new MUSICBLITZ exclusive, "Keep Turning Right," is a moody effort that marries a smooth reggae groove to twinkling keys and atmospheric guitars (acoustic and electric). While never losing an overall "rock" feel, Punchy definitely brings in outside influences, like the haunting, G-funk electronic accent that crops up on the choruses, a la Cake's "The Distance." In fact, the comparison to the Cake track is apt, as the two songs share a dark tone (not to mention the obvious driving/racing allusions), but Punchy seem less like a novelty than some found Cake, initially. Perhaps that's due to the gorgeous interplay of the acoustic guitar and keys on the bridge, the harder overall vibe of the song, or the lyrics, "I really thought that I could pull this off, but I keep turning right around corners that keep getting me lost." Even the most jaded listener will respond to the eclectic twists that drive this good, solid rock tune. A worthy effort, indeed!
