The problem with most contemporary roots-rock outfits is that they put most of their energy into achieving the proper retro sound and look, and don't spend enough time on the songwriting. So you've gotta give it up for the Riptones, whose "Crazy Charlie" is at least a little bit better than your average twang-team original. The story of a toupee-wearin', goat-draggin' oddball, "Crazy Charlie" is more of an affectionate character study than a jokey attempt at cheap laughs. True, the song coulda used a stronger melody, although the band's "Mystery Train"-like propulsion doesn't give you too much opportunity to notice. Extra points go to lead guitarist Michael Krasovech, whose Telecaster runs have more bite than a poolful of piranhas. Overall, it's easy to see why these guys might go down well with liquored-up Chicago club-goers.
