Wayne Hancock Flat Land Boogie Album: Wild, Free And Reckless
Genres: Alt-Country
"Wayne The Train" lets his band take center-stage for this modern "boogiebilly" classic. Sounds like 1954 all over again! |

Imagine that it's 1954, and you're somewhere in the dustier realms of Southern California, where you work days at the local oil field with a bunch of other transplanted Okies and West Texans. When that whistle blows on Friday nights, you and your pals head to the nearest watering hole, where you can hear some hopped-up hillbillies singin' about the "cotton fields and cattle ranches, honky tonks and all-night dances" back home. Wayne "The Train" Hancock wasn't even born in 1954, but this wild-ass boogie from his latest album sounds like he might've been there in a past life. This is the real deal, baby, complete with stand-up bass, rumbling piano (unfortunately too low in the mix), and some deliciously liquid guitar and pedal-steel runs. Wayne barks out the lyrics and instructions to his bandmates (all of whom get their chance to shine) with the intensity of a demented newsboy, and the whole song swings like there's no tomorrow. Though it technically falls under the "country" classification, I'd recommend it to anyone who digs swing, jump blues, boogie-woogie, rockabilly, or classic rock 'n' roll.
