Drummer Stanton Moore’s “Tchefunkta” starts off with a mellow give-and-take between sax and guitar, but things quickly give way to the bap-bap of the artist’s sticks-on-skins, and God bless ‘im, he just makes it sound so easy. It’s a unique situation, a drummer’s solo album, because although there are several other musicians contributing to the track, when it comes down to it, “Tchefunkta” really is all about Moore. This is a hip little number, with Charlie Hunter’s smooth-groove 8-string guitar peppering the track with a bit of New York jazz cred, while Skerik’s saxwork (or, “kookification,” as it’s credited on the album) keeps things rolling. But it’s Moore who totally shines here. Holding back when necessary and kickin’ it in when he wants to, Moore proves that the guy who sits (or, in Moore’s case when things get hectic, stands) in the back can steal the spotlight he so rightly deserves. Download “Tchefunkta” and I guarantee you’ll be left begging for Moore.
