“Denied” is the lead track from Annihilator’s Carnival Diablos disc, their first with new vocalist Joe Comeau (of Overkill and Liege Lord fame). Lineup changes are nothing new for the Canadian metal stalwarts – for more than a decade, the band has basically existed as guitarist and songwriter Jeff Waters’ longstanding solo project. Although there’s no shortage of musical and lyrical references to the “golden era” of thrash (lines like “Death is my savior tonight” just wouldn’t sound right coming from Fred Durst), the riffing and production sound surprisingly fresh, modern, and downright vicious. This is a sleek, polished riff-fest that’s seething with good old-fashioned metallic fury.
