When it dropped a couple of years back, this bicoastal collaboration of hip-hop heavy hitters showed that whatever differences existed between East and West Coast players, there was plenty of common ground in the rap game. Unfortunately, that common ground – according to Ice Cube and DMX – turned out to be just the same tired litany of social pathologies: “Mixin’ blunts and heavy liquors…fuckin’ all them golddiggers.” Cube invites anyone “who wanna sex DMX/get naked”; DMX returns the favor by noting that the ‘ho’s “keep comin’ in twos” at his buddy, and haven’t we heard this all before? Which isn’t, of course, to say the joint is without merit. “Added DMX to add grit in this shit,” Cube remarks, and on that score, at least, mission accomplished. Trailed by the usual barks, DMX rasps his way through his half of the tune, so effective that when he comes in you can almost visualize him ripping the mic out of Cube’s hands. And wedded to a blaring track with jackhammer synths that match the two MCs for intensity, it makes for some high-voltage listening. Too bad the short circuit is in the lyrics.
