Shaggy Oh Carolina (Live) Album: n/a
Genres: Reggae
Shag’s bag is showmanship and salesmanship; you get a little of both on this live run-though of his biggest hit – along with a classic dancehall crossover! |

“This next song doesn’t need much of an introduction,” Shaggy immodestly tells a House of Blues audience at the start of this ’97 live cut. You can chalk it up to hubris, but guess what: he’s right. And in the next two-and-a-half minutes, Shaggy demonstrates why that’s so, delivering his biggest hit, “Oh Carolina,” with the enthusiasm and showmanship he’s built a career on. Of course, it’d be tough to resist the tune no matter how he served it up, as it’s an irresistible slice of R&B-flavored pre-reggae that Mr. Bommbastic & Co. wisely didn’t tamper with too much – witness the prominent backing vocals and jaunty piano riff. The main difference comes via Shaggy’s distinctive, deep-voiced vocal, and his sing-jaying (half crooning, half deejaying or toasting) is even more infectious before this crowd of Sunset Strippers than on wax. Marred only by a mike squeal or two and its brief length, you should check this one out if you can’t see Shaggy in the flesh.
