Some have dubbed Ernest Ranglin’s recent work “Jamaican acid jazz,” and you can definitely hear what they’re talking about on this propulsive funk workout. Ranglin lays his Wes Montgomery/Grant Green-style fills over a burbling bassline and shuffling drum pattern that have little, on the surface, to do with the ska and reggae riddims he helped pioneer, and more in common with the JBs. Throw in a scintillating sax solo from Courtney Pine, who helped bring the acid jazz movement credibility in his native Britain and abroad, and you have a track that sounds like the wet dream of some rare groove collector searching out old Verve sides from the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. But while everything here’s on the one instead of the offbeat, which may throw off Ranglin’s reggae disciples, you can’t argue with the result -- cause it smokes, whatever latitude you’re listening in.

Ernest Ranglin brings the best of both worlds combining Reggae and Jazz with great sounds. This combination is as valuable as a un-cut diamond. The heavy guitar laces with a reggae bass is incredible! Four stars for this master piece!
