The Derrick Green-fueled incarnation of Sepultura has faced one helluva challenge -- filling the mighty shoes of Max Cavalera. 1999’s Against made little progress towards establishing a new identity for the Brazilian band that otherwise made a career out of smashing through musical, linguistic and geographic boundaries. With a big trump card in the form of ace producer Steve Evetts, Sepultura seeks to up the ante on its 2001 release, Sepulnation, and if “One Man Army” is any indication, they’ve succeeded. If you’ve seen Sepultura play live recently, you’ve probably wondered if Derrick Green would ever completely fit in with the tribe. His ill-advised bouts of guitar-wearing were painful -- it almost looked as if he was being attacked by some strange six-stringed monster from the rain forest that he couldn’t quite fend off. But perhaps those awkward days are in the past -- “One Man Army” is a superb slice of atmospheric grind that evokes the imagery and power of classic era Sepultura, but carves out some new rotting soil for the group. Derrick finds a melodic, haunting vocal niche that’s much more accessible than anything Max would ever tackle. It ain’t the same, but it’s all good. Get yer groove on with the new school Sepultura.
