Double Trouble Rock and Roll (feat. Susan Tedeschi) Album: Been A Long Time
Genres: Blues
Yep, it's that "Rock And Roll" -- Stevie Ray Vaughan's rhythm section teams up with Susan Tedeschi, Charlie Sexton and Kenny Wayne Shepard for a rippin' run-through of the worn-out Zep favorite. |

If there's one song I never need to hear again for the rest of my life, it'd have to be Led Zeppelin's "Rock And Roll." A well-meaning tribute to the music of Little Richard, Gene Vincent and early Elvis, the song is frankly one of the weaker efforts in the entire Led Zep catalog, yet it's been in over-saturation rotation on FM radio for almost thirty years. So it comes as kind of a shock to hear Double Trouble -- with help from Susan Tedeschi, Charlie Sexton and Kenny Wayne Shepard -- actually breathing new life into the soggy old tune. Sure, they stick pretty much to the original arrangement, but Tedeschi wisely avoids the temptation to copy Plant's patented wail, and Shepard (or is it Sexton?) comes off more like Eric Clapton than Jimmy Page on the guitar solo. Chris Layton's drums are live and loud, and the gallons of slap-back echo are a nice touch, as well. In all, the whole gang sounds like they're having a blast, and it's impossible not to be swept up in their fiery performance. Sure, they're little more than an all-star bar band, but few bar bands have ever ridden an old warhorse with this much enthusiasm.
