Some may criticize Bombshell Rocks for sounding derivative of Rancid – heck, even their name recalls a song by Rancid’s precursor band, Operation Ivy – but those critics are probably the same people that have given Rancid a hard time for sounding too much like the Clash. If you’re obsessing on the similarities, you’re missing the point. Yes, both bands wear their influences on their sleeves, but it’s what they do with those influences that really counts. Rancid have become one of the most stalwart, energetic, and consistently interesting bands on the punk rock circuit, never stagnating and constantly building on that Clash-inspired edge. Similarly, Bombshell Rocks take their cues from Rancid’s harder edged, “shoutier” version of that sound, and take their own version to another level, with a little more thrash, a little more raucous energy, and most intriguingly, with some country/western tinged guitar accents that really give the song a little extra spice. It adds a real Social Distortion flavor to their sound (and it seems that Social D, is an influence, too, considering the line “I’ve got ‘Mommy’s Little Monster’ on my headphones”), making an interesting mix, indeed. Just as Rancid have transcended their Clash obsession, it seems Bombshell Rocks are close to transcending their influences, as well. If the Rancid example holds true, then, Bombshell Rocks should prove “Unstoppable,” indeed.
