Erykah Badu Didn't Cha Know Album: Mama's Gun
Genres: R&B
When Erykah’s butterfly-floatin’ like this, who cares if she stings like a bee too? Mesemerizing, melt-in-your ear modern soul from one of the masters! |

Now this is more like it: Erykah floating over a flawless, funky groove, adding just enough grit with that sweet ‘n’ sour voice to keep you from drifting off into the ether. It’s one of those classic, laid-back Roots joints, driven by a hypnotic, repetitive bassline, where you really wouldn’t argue if it went on for a few hours or so. And while her mystical, Maya Angelou-esque strong woman act is great and all, it’s also appealing to see Ms. Badu a little vulnerable here, confessing she’s “tryin’ to decide…if I made a wrong turn back there somewhere.” It’s a welcome break from some other cuts on “Mama’s Gun,” where she soapboxes listeners into submission. Still, you gotta give credit to anyone keeping their head up, and Erykah remains unbowed by song’s end: “I guess I was born to make mistakes/but I ain’t scared to take the weight.” It shows: she does some pretty heavy lifting on this one, and makes it sound easy.
