Jay-Z 20 Bag Shorty Album: Balhers Forever
Genres: Rap/Hip Hop
The track definitely ain’t wack (sounds like they threw a beat behind Bacharach), but Jay-Z and his merry men have too much on their minds to make this smoothie flow the way it deserves. |

Joined by fellow rhymesmiths Gotti, Frody and Niela, Jay-Z puts his hard-edged vocals atop a surprisingly mellow track here, biting easy-listening horns and adding cooing female vocals for a kinder, gentler East Coast joint that goes down like honeyed tea. The edge, of course, comes in the verbiage, but despite some worthy lines (“Somethin’s wrong with your motor skills/cause y’all ain’t movin’ me,” for example) the quartet sounds like its collective mind is wandering a bit. From the opening sound bites about poppin’ wheelies back in the day to the predictable boasts to the chorus – which addresses the need to pay your debts promptly and share your ganja – “20 Bag Shorty” covers a lot of ground – too much to make sense in just over five minutes. Train your focus on the seductive groove, however, and you’ll find it’s worth a listen.
