Jangly guitars, unaffected vocals, and clever lyrics converge in this winsomely effective ballad that clearly comes from the heart. In “Linger,” Jonatha Brooke has penned a simple, yet powerful, pop rocker about the complex emotional landmines one must navigate in breaking off an unhealthy alliance. “I am leaving cuz I love you; I am leaving cuz I don’t/And I am hoping you will follow, and I’m praying that you won’t…let me go,” she offers in a voice laced with equal parts folk and rock. Not content to rattle off the type of tired clichés in which her pop music counterparts revel, the thoughtful Brooke is a skilled poet who avoids the “one in a million,” “lost in your eyes,” and “baby, baby, baby” tripe that pollutes the Top 40 today. “You saw me through the keyhole of a door that I kept locked/But I’d decorate the threshold just in case you knocked” is just one intriguing metaphor that will “linger” in your mind long after the music has stopped.
