Old school hip-hop elitists beware; prophets of the new school Blackalicious are here to prove that hip-hop is alive and kicking. Case in point: “Soul in Flesh,” powered by Chief Xcel’s beats and Gift of Gab’s poet flows. The Bay Area duo teams up with other conscious headz (such as Aceyalone, Talib Kweli, and Saul Williams) on The Unbound Project, a hip-hop manifesto against the abuses of the criminal justice system. The disc comes in the wake of last year’s stellar Nia, courtesy of Quannum Records (formerly Solesides), a leading underground label whose roster represents the finest in new school and experimental hip-hop.

“Soul in Flesh” is one part beats and two parts storytelling, dashed with some seriously soulful female vocals. Gab tells a story of an inmate who has long been behind bars. A champion of MC battles, the skilled Gab can out-rhyme almost any wordsmith at an amazing velocity. Xcel’s beats are rootsy and melodic, with spoken word samples and enough jazz to give the music well-aged flavor and a sense of history. “Soul in Flesh” makes you remember why MCs are the masters of the flow -- and that hip-hop is not a realm relegated to gangstas and booty, but a place for lyrical craftsmen hard at work. Blackalicious is definitely a new school force to be reckoned with.

Played a great set on Ben Harper's last run through town. These guys have the beat and message to dig.
