Solex Athens, OH Album: Pick Up
Genres: Alternative
This freaky bit of anti-music is an acquired taste, to be sure. But fans of the avant-garde will find something delicious in this offbeat sonic stew. |

Idiosyncratic, a-melodic, and thoroughly bizarre, Solex’s “Athens, OH” is a freaky little place you may well like to visit, but it’s unclear how long you’ll stay. Don’t even try to map a cohesive course through the melody, as the path followed here reveals a new sonic turn at every sampled twist. This anti-pop love child of Bjork and Sonic Youth (a la “Bull In The Heather”) doesn’t play by any rules and laughs in the face of compositional conformity. Artist Elisabeth Esselink recorded the song, and the entire album from which it comes, in the basement of her Amsterdam record shop; and though samples are the order of the day, Esselink eschewed her own vinyl resources and recorded most of the sound loops at live shows ranging from classical concerts to heavy metal gigs. “Athens, OH” is an avant-garde outpost on the alterna-pop landscape. Proceed with caution.

experimental little song. sounds a little cartoonish to me. I'd like to hear some more of her stuff.
