Aimee Mann has never been one to be kept hushed. Since she and her band 'Til Tuesday achieved critical mass with their 1985 hit "Voices Carry," the wry singer/songwriter has fought to be heard. The song's sentiments -- about a partner who wants to make her into something she isn't -- are eerily prescient for Mann's solo career. For although her post-Tuesday efforts Whatever (1993) and I'm With Stupid (1996) reaped heaps of critical praise for their cerebral, semi-acoustic pop, they were derided by label personnel for lacking catchy (read: mass-market) radio hits. Seems that Mann's collaborators -- Elvis Costello and Jules Shear –- just couldn't help her come up with anything good enough.
It’s ironic, then, that "Susan" -- a cut from Mann's forthcoming Bachelor No. 2, which she is issuing herself -- quietly and deftly seeps into the subconscious. Over a muffled drum beat and bent blues notes, Mann urges a friend to flee a bad relationship. Yet instead of writhing in her protagonist's anger, Mann concentrates on Susan's moment of grace, when she will feel the relief of being safe at last. Mann's vocals here are as clear and fluid as spring water, and wash over the background with a light psychedelic veneer.
Smart pop never sounded so sweet, or satisfying. Hear what the record companies missed.
